  • Can JShot capture images from video players such as VLC or MPlayer?
  • The video players usually run in overlay mode. In this mode the result will be a blank rectangle. The reason for this is that the graphics are bypassing the normal screen and going directly to the video card. You should use the built-in capture method of the player and open it with JShot. In Windows XP, you can disable hardware acceleration - but I don't really recommend it - by opening the Display Properties menu, clicking on the "Settings" tab, clicking, "Advanced", "Troubleshoot", and moving the Hardware Acceleration Slider to "None."

  • Where does JShot store its configuration files?
  • JShot stores its profiles, plugins and config in the ".jshot" directory. This
directory is placed in the root folder of JShot.
By default this will be placed:
      Windows:
       C:\Program Files\JShot\.jshot
      Linux:
       /home/<username>/JShot/.jshot
      Web start:
       C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\.jshot

  • How can I uninstall the web start version?
  • Java Web Start is a deployment technology, it is not necessary to uninstall. The application is cached in the Java Web Start cache. But you can clear the cache by using the javaws -uninstall command (it will uninstall ALL JWS application!) and delete the configuration files (see above).

  • Can JShot record a screencast?
  • No, video recording is not supported. Perhaps in the future..

  • The popup menu of the System tray does not disappear in time, and a part of this reamins on the screenshot.
  • That's because some window managers are animating menus and the hiding is delayed by a fade out effect. In this case I recommend to use double clicking on the icon and you get the same functionality without using popup menu. Or you can disable the fade out effect in Windows XP by opening Control Panel/System, Advance tab, Performance settings, select custom and uncheck "Fade out menu items after clicking"

  • My webbrowser does not launch the JNLP file.
  • Make sure you have Java runtime environment 1.6 or better installed and the .jnlp extension is assigned to javaws.

  • Why does not the System Tray appear icon in my Linux?
  • If you use window manager other than KDE or Gnome the System Tray utility may not be supported.

  • Can I upload pictures using the command line?
  • Of corse, see "java -jar JShot.jar -help" for command line parameters. For example if you want to upload the screenshot using only the console, type: "java -jar JShot.jar -capture full -gui console".

  • Why does not the Skype plugin work on Linux?
  • Unfortunately the Skype for Linux does not support the command line parameter to send files.

  • Does JShot support hotkeys?
  • Not yet. Unfortunately I have to use native functions for each platform to support system wide hotkeys. This takes time to implement and test on various operating systems. It will be available some time, because it is an important feature but I am not sure when.

  • Is JShot free
  • Yes, it is free for personal usage. But I gladly accept any donations.
